De Branding · Terschelling

The real conversation rarely begins in a meeting room.

The conversations that matter most to a business are difficult to squeeze between two appointments. In the office, the daily pressure, established roles and familiar answers are always sitting at the table too.

That is why I sometimes invite entrepreneurs and CEOs to De Branding on Terschelling. Deliberately one-to-one and away from their usual environment. We talk, walk, eat and sometimes let nothing happen for a while. Not as a luxury escape, but to create the calm in which the real pain, doubt, ambition and dreams can come to the surface.

Not to get away from the business. To return with a different view.

I’m not there to nod politely.

The client gets all the room they need, but I am not there to nod politely. I interrupt, add, disagree and ask the question they would rather avoid. Sometimes that creates friction. It should. Only beyond the polished first version do the real pain, ambition and dreams come to the surface... together with the opportunities no one has seen yet.

A different environment is not scenery.

When you move, the nature of the conversation changes. Silences do not have to be filled straight away, positions loosen and new connections become visible. At the table, in the dunes or leaning against the Defender, the surroundings help us step outside the company’s existing logic. The calm is functional. The conversation stays sharp.

No standard programme.

The question sets the pace. Sometimes we need to dig into positioning, products or brand architecture. Sometimes the real obstruction lies in ownership, organisation or commercial choices. The outcome is not fixed in advance. The intention is: return with sharper choices and more room to move.

A few days on Terschelling will not solve a business question by themselves. They do create room for the conversation that keeps being postponed at home.
